RES4Africa concludes Hydrogen Fuel Cell Training under its Re-skilling Lab Initiative

RES4Africa Foundation announces the successful conclusion of its latest milestone within the Re-skilling Lab initiative, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Training Programme, a significant step towards capacitating African institutions and professionals for the continent’s sustainable energy future.

This achievement marks the expansion of the Foundation’s vocational training footprint, thanks to a strategic partnership with the Sasol Foundation, established in 2025 to scale up the reach of the Re-skilling Lab. Enel Foundation, a founding partner of the initiative since 2020, continues to provide crucial support, underscoring its commitment to advancing vocational training and re-skilling efforts.

The programme was designed as a train-the-trainer course, aimed at preparing lecturers from South African TVET colleges to deliver the Hydrogen Fuel Cell System Practitioner curriculum to their students. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on experience, the course provided participants with the skills needed to install, operate, and maintain hydrogen fuel cell systems, and to teach these competencies within their institutions.

The course was offered to 30 lecturers, comprising 18 males and 12 females, supported by the Enel Foundation and Sasol Foundation , from seven TVET colleges: Flavius Mareka, Gert Sibande, Goldfields, Motheo, Maluti, Nkangala, and Tshwane North. The lecturers were selected based on entry requirements set by the University of Pretoria.

This 10-day course has been designed and delivered in partnership with the University of Pretoria, blending theory and practice to equip lecturers with the key skills needed to install, operate, and maintain hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The journey will culminate in a Closing Ceremony on May 19, 2025, celebrating not only the achievements of the participating lecturers but also the collaborative efforts of all partners involved. This marks an important step toward building local capacity and advancing Africa’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
