The third and final session of the Renewable Energy Training delivered under RES4Africa’s Technical and Vocational School has successfully concluded in Malawi, marking the completion of a comprehensive capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening national expertise in renewable energy systems.
The Malawi edition of the Technical & Vocational School, promoted by RES4Africa Foundation in collaboration with UNECA, African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), and Strathmore University, brought together professionals and technicians from key Malawian institutions and authorities through a blended learning pathway combining online and in-person sessions.
Held on site from 26 to 30 January 2026, the final session focused on advanced technical, economic and regulatory aspects of renewable energy deployment, with particular attention to off-grid and mini-grid solutions. Building on the foundations laid during the first two sessions, participants deepened their knowledge not only on the technical aspects of PV system design, operations and maintenance, but also on business modeling, economic feasibility and regulatory constraints. .Indeed, the programme further addressed the full project lifecycle of renewable energy systems, covering EPC procurement and construction, installation procedures, testing and commissioning, system decommissioning, and project and contract management. Dedicated modules explored business models for mini-grids, energy consumption monitoring, tariff setting, and mini-grid economics, including cost structures, financing sources and market development.
Participants also engaged with policy, legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to energy micro-grids, with targeted insights into Malawi’s regulatory openness, attractiveness and readiness. Case studies on net metering, competitive procurement and auctions, alongside international and regional experiences, provided practical perspectives on scaling up renewable energy solutions.
Throughout the week, theoretical sessions were complemented by working groups and final project presentations, fostering peer-to-peer learning and practical application of the acquired knowledge. Contributions from trainers and experts from RES4Africa, Strathmore University, UNECA, IDEP, GSE and international institutions ensured a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented approach.
With the conclusion of the third session, the Malawi T&V School edition stands as a concrete example of RES4Africa Academy’s commitment to inclusion, youth and women empowerment, and the development of local technical capacities. By equipping professionals with both technical and strategic skills, the programme contributes to advancing sustainable electrification and accelerating Malawi’s transition towards affordable, reliable and clean energy.
