A Programme dedicated to support the just energy transformation of Sub-Saharan Africa’s countries
RES4Africa’s Sub-Saharan Programme works to support the region maximise its huge renewable energy potential. Through research and study dissemination, capacity building programmes and stakeholder engagement, we strive to create an enabling environment for the implementation of renewable energy projects in the region and drive the just energy transformation of Sub-Saharan countries.
Context
Thanks to its vast natural resources combined with a growing population and economy, Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the most promising world regions for clean energy sources. However, despite great leaps forwards in recent years, installed renewables capacity and access to affordable and reliable electricity is very low: many countries dependent on biomass and fossil fuel consumption, stifling economic development and the provision of goods and services.Variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power have an enormous potential, but the frameworks in place to support their development can often be lacklustre and out of date.
Method
Building a regulatory and legislative environment which favours RES projects and attracts private investments will be key in driving the just transition and the development of renewable energy in the region. To achieve these goals, RES4Africa continuously works to address the key issues of the area, adapting and developing its actions to suit local needs through advocacy, reports, studies and training programmes.
