RES4Africa is leading the Study on Business model of BMS in Africa and Stakeholders’ Engagement in a consortium of 16 partners working on the Horizon EU-funded BIG LEAP project. This ambitious 3.5 year journey aiming to achieve the next generation of Battery Management Systems (BMS) that improve compatibility, connect 1st Life Batteries with 2nd Life Battery Energy Storage Systems (SL-BESS), and make batteries more adaptable, strengthening their value chains.

A new three-layer architecture will be designed to ensure interoperability, safety, and reliability. It will be complemented with an adaptable ESS design to ensure BMS integration and expand the SLB's potential applications. Additionally, BIG LEAP intends to optimise the battery reconfiguration process by making it cost-effective, faster, and standardized.

BIG LEAP intends to improve the interoperability between battery chemistries and architectures and enhance the operation reliability of second life batteries, thus extending adaptability and empowering battery value chains.

Africa is a continent in continuous transformation, with a sustained economic and population growth, a fast-paced urbanization and a young generation of talents who is leading its business revolution. This transformation requires energy and will require it even more in the next decades.
