17 young professionals and aspiring renewable energy practitioners from Kenya participated in the 38th edition of RES4Africa Academy’s Technical and Vocational School (formerly MGA) on Micro-Grid Academy: Module #2 – DRE Site Selection and Engineering. The training, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from June 9th to 13th, 2025, was supported by Enel Foundation, a key knowledge partner. 

Hosted at Strathmore University and implemented in collaboration with Strathmore Energy Research Centre (SERC), the programme offered participants a dynamic, hands-on learning experience. Module 2 focused on site selection and technical design for decentralized renewable energy (DRE) systems, with a curriculum covering demand assessment, load forecasting, PV system components, and feasibility analysis. 

The training was enriched with practical sessions and on-site learning. Participants attended a presentation by OffgridSun on the productive uses of energy, which featured a case study of a solar smart water technology project in Kenya aimed at reducing carbon emissions. They also took part in a field visit to St. Kizito Vocational Tranining Institute, where they explored the laboratories and the 30kW hybrid mini-grid. During the visit, trainers from the institute delivered lectures on DRE systems and technical training practices, offering valuable insights into real-life applications. 

The course placed a strong emphasis on inclusion and empowerment, encouraging the active participation of youth and women, and promoting peer learning in a multicultural setting. Interactive lectures and expert-led discussions equipped attendees with essential skills to contribute meaningfully to the energy transition across Africa.
