On the 29th of September 2023, RES4Africa Foundation will hold the 12th round of AM-Powering Connexions, an initiative promoted in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Pretoria, CSIR, Nedbank, SAESA, SAPVIA, SAWEA and Enel Foundation.
The twelfth session of the AM-Powering Connexions The South African Electricity Wheeling Landscape will be held online, and will delve into the heart of South Africa's evolving energy sector. The region is in the midst of a profound energy transformation, marked by a surge in electricity consumers procuring energy directly from third-party generators, often privately owned. This practice, known as "wheeling," hinges on Eskom's and municipal distribution networks. While this shift holds the potential for substantial benefits, it also presents a series of challenges for South Africa's electricity landscape.
This session will also feature RES4Africa's latest study, developed in a collaborative effort with PwC South Africa. The report sheds light on regulations that underpin a robust wheeling framework in the country, while also revealing critical challenges. These obstacles include tariff disparities, municipal engagement complications, NERSA (National Energy Regulator of South Africa) interference, outdated access rules, and the absence of policy guidance.
Participation is free of charge, however we kindly ask to register (stakeholders and/or members who have already registered do not need to re-register). After the meeting, all the participants will receive a brief highlighting the topic of the month, points raised during the discussion, emerged insights, and suggested readings on the topic. All the confirmed participants will receive instructions on how to take part in the session and are invited to join the AM-Powering Connexions LinkedIn Group and take part in a poll where they can share information, and initiate conversations and discussions about topics covered during sessions.
