RES4Africa and Nkangala TVET College Launch Renewable Energy Training as Part of Re-skilling Lab Initiative

October 2, 2023

Rome, 2nd October 2023 – RES4Africa Foundation and Nkangala TVET College have launched a Call for Applications for industry-accredited renewable energy training. The course will take place from November 20th to 24th and from November 27th to 28th at the College's Campus in Witbank, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

This training programme is a key component of the Foundation's Re-skilling Lab initiative, which aims to provide renewable energy skills training to the local community, with a particular focus on the youth of Mpumalanga Province. The lab plays an integral role in the Foundation's efforts to support a just energy transition, given the decommissioning of coal power plants in the region. In line with the initiative’s community-oriented approach, RES4Africa and Nkangala TVET College offer an intensive in-person Solar Photovoltaic Installer entrepreneurial training. The course is designed for 30 qualified and unqualified electricians and electrical technicians, aiming to equip them with the skills required to find and create job opportunities in PV rooftop solar installation.

The programme includes the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association's (SAPVIA) Solar PV Rooftop Installer course and modules covering technical and soft skills for business development in renewable energy. Trained TVET lecturers will deliver the SAPVIA Rooftop Solar course, while industry experts will contribute to the soft skills modules. This comprehensive approach will enable participants to acquire the necessary skills for launching a business in the solar PV sector. Attending SAPVIA Solar PV course, they will have the chance to gain industry-recognized rooftop PV skills, as well as to apply for the GreenCard Assessment as SAPVIA-recognized PV Rooftop Installers.

In addition to the training, unqualified electricians with documented relevant work experience who respond to the Call will have the opportunity to undergo the artisan recognition of prior learning (ARPL) process. This process serves as a bridge, connecting participants' existing work experience, skills, and knowledge with the requirements for qualifying and successfully passing a trade test to become certified Electricians in Construction.

Please refer to the Extended Call for Applications and the Summary of Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) to check whether you meet the eligibility criteria and access further information.
